Water Harvesting System

Rainwater harvesting is the process of collection of rainwater from surfaces on which rain falls, filtering it and storing it for multiple uses. Rainwater harvesting puts the supply of water back to normal levels.




Installation

The water coming down through stack pipe from the roof is passed through the Filter. The inlet end is connected with down stack pipe from the top and outlet is connected with water tank or recharge well from 'he side. The filtered water is either stored in the storage water tank (for further use) or directed to the recharge well. To remove the initial floating debris and flush the pipe, an open able cap is provided at the bottom of the filter. By opening the bottom cap,the initial water can be bypassed from the system. The internal screen element can be removed for the cleaning purpose by opening the complete bottom assembly. The filter is installed vertically on the wall maintaining the minimum ground clearance as per table for easy removal of filter element for cleaning.

  1. Connect the down stake pipe with inlet of the filtrain and outlet to the discharge point as per your plan.
  2. Maintain the minimum ground clearance as per the details provided
  3. Durng its operation, the bottom cap (A) is opened to drain out the initial rain water for 5 — 10 minutes or till the terrace impurities are flushed out and there afer it is closed for the normal working
  4. This bottom cap (A) is opened as and when required to flush out the accumulated foating matter in the system time to time.
  5. Over a period of time the screen filter inside the Filtrain sets clogged and it needs to be cleaned time to time. For this the screen elerrent (E) need to be taken out.
  6. To remove the screen alement (E), open the Nut (N) turning it anti clockwise by hand of using appropriate spanner.
  7. Nut (N) is connected to body (B) by threads which are sealed by a rubber ring.
  8. The removed screen element is cleaned under running tap water.
  9. Once cleaned, the components sre reassembled.
  10. Time to time flushing and cleaning of screen element helps in efficient cleaning apart from improved filter life.

Present Water Availability

  • India population is 16% or world population, whereas water resources are only 4% of the world.
  • Present Water demand is 1122 billion m3 (surface water 690 billion m3 and ground water 432 billion m3)
  • By 2050, Groundwater demand would increase to 710 billion m3.
  • Out of 236 Blocks, 204 blocks are over exploited due to above situation. The demand in 2050 would be doubled, we can imagine scenario in 2050.

  • Water Quality will become unsafe in majority of places.
  • No food to 1/3 of the population.
  • Many water bourne diseases like Fluorosis, Dementia, Diarrhea, Cancer etc. will be order of the day.

What is Artificial Recharge

Artificial Recharge is the process by which the ground water recharge is augmented at the rate much higher than those under natural conditions of percolation.

Advantages of Artificial Recharge

  • To enhance the ground water yield in depleted the aquifier due to urbanization.
  • Conservation and storage of excess surface water for the future requirements.
  • To improve the quality of existing ground water through dilution.

वर्षाजल संग्रहण क्या है?

वर्षा के बाद इस पानी को उत्पादक कार्यों के लिये उपयोग हेतु एकत्र करने की प्रक्रिया को वर्षाजल संग्रहण कहा जाता है। दूसरे शब्दों में आपकी छत पर गिर रहे वर्षाजल को सामान्य तरीके से एकत्र कर उसे शुद्ध बनाने के काम को वर्षाजल संग्रहण कहते हैं।

आवश्यकता

आज उत्तम गुणवत्ता वाले पानी की कमी चिन्ता का कारण बन चुकी है। यद्यपि शुद्ध और अच्छी गुणवत्ता वाला वर्षाजल शीघ्र ही बह जाता है। परन्तु यदि इसे एकत्र किया जाये तो जलसंकट पर नियंत्रण पाया जा सकता है। वर्तमान जलसंकट को देखते हुए यही एक मात्र विकल्प बचा है जिसके द्वारा हम जल संकट का समाधान प्राप्त कर सकते हैं।

उपयुक्त स्थान

सामान्यतया वर्षाजल संग्रहण कहीं भी किया जा सकता है, परन्तु इसके लिये वे स्थल सर्वथा उपयुक्त होते हैं जहाँ पर जल का बहाव तेज होता है और वर्षाजल शीघ्रता से बह जाता है। इस प्रकार वर्षाजल संग्रहण निम्नलिखित स्थानों के लिये सर्वथा उपयुक्त होता है:

  1. कम भूजल वाले स्थल,
  2. दूषित भूजल वाले स्थल,
  3. पर्वतीय/विषम जल वाले स्थल,
  4. सूखा या बाढ़ प्रभावित स्थल,
  5. प्रदूषित जल वाले स्थल,
  6. कम जनसंख्या घनत्त्व वाले स्थल,
  7. अधिक खनिज व खारा पानी वाले स्थल, एवं
  8. महंगे पानी व विद्युत वाले स्थल,

उपयोग

सामान्यतः वर्षाजल शुद्ध जल होता है तथा इसका उपयोग सभी कार्याें के लिये किया जा सकता है तथापि निम्नलिखित कार्यों के लिये इसका उपयोग सर्वथा उपयुक्त है: 1. बर्तनों की साफ-सफाई, 2. नहाना व कपड़ा धोना, 3. शौच आदि कार्य, 4. सिंचाई के लिये, 5. मवेशियों के पीने, नहाने आदि के लिये, एवं 6. औद्योगिक कार्य, वर्षाजल की गुणवत्ता जाँचने के उपरान्त यदि वह उपयुक्त पाई जाती है तो इसका उपयोग पेयजल एवं खाना बनाने के लिये भी किया जा सकता है।

वर्षाजल संग्रहण के लाभ

विश्वव्यापी जलसंकट की समस्या का समाधान इसी विधि से सम्भव है। इस तकनीक के कई प्रत्यक्ष व अप्रत्यक्ष लाभ हैं जिनका विवरण निम्नवत है:

  1. भूजल/सरकारी जलापूर्ति पर निर्भरता कम,
  2. जहाँ जलस्रोत नहीं हैं वहाँ पर कृषि कार्य भी सम्भव,
  3. जल के क्षेत्र में आत्मनिर्भरता,
  4. उच्च गुणवत्ता एवं रसायनमुक्त शुद्ध जल की प्राप्ति,
  5. जलापूर्ति की न्यूनतम लागत,
  6. बाढ़ के वेग पर नियंत्रण से मृदा अपरदन कम से कम,
  7. सभी को समुचित मात्रा में जल उपलब्धता,
  8. गिरते भूजल स्तर को ऊपर उठाया जा सकता है, 9. यह पानी के मुख्य स्रोत का काम करता है,
  9. यह जल हर प्रकार के घातक लवणों आदि से मुक्त होता है।
  10. घनी आबादी वाले क्षेत्रों में वर्षा का जल छतों से बहकर नालों में जाकर गन्दगी पैदा करता है जबकि इसको संग्रहीत करके इस समस्या से मुक्ति मिल सकती है।
  11. ज़मीन के अन्दर संग्रहीत जल का वाष्पीकरण नहीं होता है अतः पानी के समाप्त होने की सम्भावना कम ही रहती है।
  12. ज़मीन के अन्दर संचित पानी में लवणों की तीव्रता कम रहती है।
  13. अन्य स्रोतों पर निर्भरता नहीं रहती है।

Why Artificial Recharge

In most rainfall areas of the country, the availability of utilizable surface water is so low that people have to depend largely in ground water for agriculture and domestic uses.

So in order to improve the ground water situation it is necessary to artificially recharge the depleted ground water aquifier.

Identification of Areas for Recharge

  • Where Ground Water Level are declining due to over exploitation.
  • Where Substantial part of aquifier has already been desaturated i.e. regeneration of water in wells and in handpumps is slow after some water has been drawn.
  • Where availability of water from wells and handpumps inadequate during the lean months.
  • Where Ground Water Quality is Poor and there is no alternative source of water.

Quality of Source Water

  • Problem Which arise as a result of recharge to ground water are mainly related to the quality of raw waters that are available for recharge and which generally require some source of treatment before being used to recharge installations.
  • A Major requirement of water that are to be used in recharge projects is that they be silt free.

Conclusion

  • Thus it can be conclude that artificial recharge give the reduction of run off, increase availability of ground water especially in summer month, increase in irrigation, revival of springs, improvement of ground water quality.
  • Though Ground Water recharge scheme either naturally or artificially may the best suitable answer.
